An ATM in a convenience store

Some people want a business with no inventory, no spoiled product and no restocking at 6 am. For them, the ATM is the quiet cousin of vending.

How an ATM owner gets paid

Every time someone pulls cash from your machine, they pay a surcharge, usually $2.50 to $3.50 at independently owned ATMs. You also earn a small interchange fee per transaction, roughly $0.10 to $0.25. The location typically gets a share, often $0.50 to $1.00 per transaction (Herring Bank).

What one machine really makes

Published ranges are wide, and that's the honest answer. One bank's guide puts typical net income at $250 to $450 a month per machine after processing, cellular and the location's share, with strong bar and event placements going higher (Herring Bank). An ATM reseller cites $200 to $700 a month at steady locations (ATMTrader). Operators on forums also report machines that barely clear a few hundred dollars a year in the wrong spot.

The pattern is the same as vending: the location decides everything.

What it costs to start

  • Machine: roughly $3,000 to $10,000, new or refurbished.

  • Monthly costs: processing, a cellular connection and insurance.

  • Vault cash: the money inside the machine. Many new owners underestimate this. You either load it yourself or use a third-party vault cash service. Here's self-load vs third-party vault cash explained.

Where ATMs work

Cash-heavy places where people don't want to leave: bars, nightclubs, laundromats, tattoo shops, festivals, flea markets, convenience stores with no bank nearby. A machine next to a bank branch is competing with free.

Rules to take seriously

You'll sign with a licensed processor, and machines must meet ADA and EMV requirements. Some states also register or license ATM operators, so check your state's banking regulator before you buy. Cash handling carries security risk, so plan how and when you load.

Illustrative example

Illustrative only: a bar machine doing 8 withdrawals a day at a $3 surcharge grosses about $720 a month. Take out a $0.75 location share per withdrawal and around $75 in processing and cellular, and you're near $465 a month before insurance and your time.

What this means for you

An ATM won't make you rich on its own. A handful of them in the right bars and laundromats can cover a car payment, then a mortgage, while your evenings stay yours. Many operators run ATMs alongside vending on the same route. How much ATM machines make goes deeper on the numbers.
