Nobody leaves a job they're tired of because of a spreadsheet. They leave because one building said yes, then another one did. Lately the buildings saying yes want more than a snack machine.
The number
71 —> 572. That is how many Smart Store locations ran on Cantaloupe's platform at the start and the end of 2025, an eightfold jump in one year, according to its 2026 Micropayment Trends Report. The same report puts the average purchase at $2.01 at a vending machine, $3.02 at a micro market and $4.49 at a Smart Store.
Same people, same break room. Give them a door to open and more to choose from, and they tend to spend more per visit.
What's moving in vending
A business school swapped its vending for kiosks. Syracuse University's Whitman School replaced its traditional machines with smart coolers, a smart oven, hot pizza and bean-to-cup coffee after student focus groups asked for healthier food and round-the-clock access. Syracuse University Today has the lineup.
Tap is the default now. Contactless made up 85% of cashless vending sales in 2025, up from 78% the year before, per Cantaloupe.
Micro markets are still growing, just slower. Cantaloupe says micro markets kept expanding in 2025 at a slower pace than in earlier years, while operators focused harder on performance and placement. In plain words: the building matters more than the box.
What to do about it
You don't need a smart store to use any of this. You need to pitch the right box to the right room.
A small office or a waiting room: a machine with a card reader is plenty.
A break room where the same crew shows up every day, with a manager who trusts them: that is where an open-door cooler can earn its keep.
Not sure which one you're looking at? This side-by-side on smart coolers and micro markets walks through the trade-offs.
Do this today
Write down three buildings near you with a break room you've actually seen.
Next to each one, write "machine" or "cooler" and one sentence on why.
Pick the one with the most people and find out who runs it.
From invisible to first in ChatGPT.
Bob's Your Uncle has spent twenty years helping challenger brands win their categories. But when buyers asked ChatGPT about their own category, the agency didn't show up.
With ChatFeatured, their AI visibility went from 7% to 22% in 90 days, and they went from invisible to first in ChatGPT.
They're not the only ones:
Vessel: AI visibility up 2,200%+
SCOJO: AI visibility up 160%
WikiSleep: brand mentions up 113%
ChatFeatured finds the questions where AI leaves you out, writes the content that gets you cited, and reports the lift every week. Your team decides what ships.

A bigger format means a bigger conversation with the building. The Vending Location Playbook ($47, one-time) has the walk-in script, the objections you'll hear, and the placement agreement to leave behind. Or get all three kits in the Get Started Bundle for $69.
