A night-shift nurse at a vending machine

Most people who want a vending business drive past the best building in town every day. It has no sign worth reading and the parking lot is full at midnight.

The play: a warehouse with a night shift

Think about who is inside at 2 a.m. Forty people on a break, the cafeteria closed if there ever was one, and the nearest open store a ten-minute drive they don't have time for. Whatever is in the break room is the only food in the building.

That is why operators like these buildings. The people are there for long hours, they can't leave, and the manager already hears complaints about the empty machine in the corner.

How to spot one

  • Cars in the lot after dark. Drive the industrial park at 9 p.m. A full lot means a second shift.

  • Trucks at the docks. Loading at night means people working at night.

  • A hiring sign that says "2nd and 3rd shift". They are telling you the hours for free.

  • A machine that's half empty. If you can see the break room or the lobby, look at the rows. Empty rows mean the current operator stopped showing up. That is your opening.

What to say

Ask for the person who runs the building day to day: the operations manager, the facility manager or HR. Then keep it short.

❝

"I'm a local operator. I noticed you run a night shift. What do your people have to eat on their break right now?"

Then stop talking. If the answer is "not much" or "the machine is always empty", you are not selling anything. You are fixing a problem they already have.

Do this today

  1. Pick one industrial park within 20 minutes of home.

  2. Drive it once after dark and write down every building with a full lot.

  3. Look up who runs each one before you walk in, so you ask for a name and not "the manager".

One thing to plan for: plenty of people don't carry cash any more. Put a card reader on the machine from day one. Nayax is one of the common ones. (Partner link: VendBuddy may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.)

For subscribers first

Some buildings raise their hand and ask for a machine. Those requests go on the VendBuddy Marketplace, next to routes and machines for sale. Free members see each listing seven days after it posts. With the Priority Pass you see it the day it posts and get an email when one lands in your area. The pass is included with any paid plan.
