Picture two operators with the same machine and the same words.
One walks into a 12-person insurance office that closes at 4:30 and sits next to a gas station. The manager says yes. Six months later the machine is doing $90 a month and the operator is wondering why vending "doesn't work."
The other walks into a warehouse with 140 people on two shifts and a 25-minute lunch. The manager is lukewarm and says yes anyway. That machine pays for itself before the operator has learned everyone's name.
Same pitch. Different building. The building did the work.
Most people practice the wrong thing
When you're new, the pitch feels like the scary part, so that's what you rehearse. But a simple, honest ask is enough at a good location. Something like: you run machines locally, you'll install and stock one at no cost, they get a share of sales, and would they try it.
What a pitch can't do is put people in the building, keep them there past lunch, or remove the convenience store across the street. Before you rehearse another word, ask three questions about the spot.
Three questions before you walk in
Who is here, and for how long? Count the people on site at the same time, not the headcount on paper. Fifty people for eight hours beats 300 people who pass through for ten minutes.
What can they already buy? If there's a cafeteria, a full micro market or a store 90 seconds away, your machine is competing. If the closest snack is a drive away, your machine is the answer.
When are they hungry and stuck? Night shifts, weekend crews, long lunches that aren't long enough to leave. That's where machines earn.
Then do the 60-second math
Once a spot passes those questions, sanity-check it. Plug the machine cost, a conservative guess at daily sales and your price per item into the free vending ROI calculator. If the payback only works with optimistic numbers, keep looking. That takes a minute and can save you a year.
The freeing part
This is good news if you're nervous about selling. You don't have to be a great salesperson. You have to be good at picking buildings, and that's a skill you can learn from a list, a map and a few honest questions.
If you don't know where those buildings are in your area, here's how operators find vending locations without driving around for weeks.
